VAT rates in the UK

VAT (Value Added Tax) is charged on most goods and services in the UK. The standard rate is 20%. Some goods and services attract a reduced rate of 5% (e.g. domestic energy, children's car seats) or are zero-rated (e.g. most food, books, children's clothing).

When do tradespeople charge VAT?

You must register for VAT if your VAT-taxable turnover exceeds the current threshold (Β£90,000 for 2024/25). Once registered, you charge VAT on your services and materials and can reclaim VAT on your business purchases.

How to use this calculator

Enter the amount and select whether you want to add VAT (for quoting a price to a client) or remove VAT (to find the net amount from a VAT-inclusive price). The standard 20% rate is pre-filled β€” change it if you need to calculate at the reduced 5% rate.
